Sister City of Richmond, Indiana
Serpukhov, Russia
Serpukhov lies 99 kilometers south of Moscow, at the junction of the Nara and Oka Rivers. The city was built on the high promontory overlooking the rivers. It was mentioned in historical accounts as early as 1339 A.D.
A stone fortress was constructed about 1556 to help defend the southern Russian frontier. Some sections of the white citadel wall still remain. In 1696 the Troitskill cathedral was built inside the citadel walls. The city developed as a center for trade and handi-crafts in the 16th and 17th centuries. Economic growth led to the construction of two monasteries and the Pokrovskaia Refectory church. By the mid 19th century Serpukhov had become an important textile manufacturing center.
Since the 1917 revolution, numerous industries have been founded in Serpukhov. In addition to textile manufacturing, motorcycles, manmade fibers, petroleum products, furniture, prefabricated housing, electric machines and leather goods were produced. The region was also very active in nuclear research.
As a "satellite" to Serpukhov, the city of Puschino was founded as a scientific research center. It houses the Serpukhov Radio Observatory with three radio telescopes studying the planets and outer space. It placed a part in the discovery of the outer corona of the sun and measuring the surface temperature of Venus. Other institutes in Puschino conduct research in chemistry, biology and physics.
In Provino, another satellite six miles from Serpukhov, where the first nuclear accelerator in the world is located. For many years it drew scientists from around the world to study medical nuclear energy effects. Scientists from the U.S. have studied there for years. It is an area rich in art and culture and has been home to many important Russian artists.
Higher education in Serpukhov includes technical schools, a medical school, and a teacher's college. There are also museums of history and art, along with a wide network of the performing arts.
Early cultural exchanges between Richmond and Serpukhov included several artists of current Russian "National Treasures" standards. These artists, the dignitaries, the businessmen and others who have visited Richmond, presented us with a colorful understanding of everyday life in Russia today and yesterday.

Information
Serpukhov
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Serpukhov (Russian: Се́рпухов) is an old town in Moscow Oblast, Russia, which is situated at the confluence of the Oka and the Nara Rivers. It is located 99 km south from Moscow on the Moscow—Simferopol highway, at The Moscow—Tula railway passes through the town. Population: 131,097 (2002 Census).
The town of Serpukhov was established in 1339 to protect the Southern approaches to Moscow. Two years later it was made a seat of the powerful princedom ruled by a cousin and close associate of Dmitry Donskoy, Vladimir of Serpukhov. The princedom continued until 1456, when the last prince escaped to Lithuania.
The town frequently fell prey to the hordes of Toqtamysh, Crimean Tatars, and other steppe conquerors. It was necessary to protect it with a stone citadel, or kremlin, which was completed by 1556. The citadel commands a steep hill where the small Serpeyka river enters the Nara River. However during the 19th century, parts of the citadel were demolished by town's inhabitants, who used its limestone for their private residences. Even now the vast majority of basements in nearby houses are built from this material.
In the kremlin, the chief monument is the Trinity cathedral, built in 1696 in Moscow baroque style. The Vysotskiy monastery (its name being derived from the Russian word for heights) features a cathedral and refectory dating from the late 16th century. Another important cloister is called Vladychny, with the Presentation cathedral and a tent-like St. George's church, both erected during Boris Godunov's reign. The latter monastery is named after the honorary title of Russian bishops, as it was founded by the holy metropolitan Alexis in 1360.
In modern times Serpukhov has become a local industrial center with textile, mechanical engineering, furniture and paper-producing industries. However, its current economic situation is a little worse than the average economic situation for towns in Moscow Oblast. The condition of architectural monuments is appaling, and they need serious restoration. Stanislaw Lesniewski, leader of the Polish school of logic, was born in Serpukhov in 1886.
